Your Fire-Ready Home Checklist
Most homes lost to wildfire are ignited by embers, not flames. These steps, based on guidance from IBHS, CAL FIRE, and NFPA, reduce the chances an ember finds something to burn.
The first 5 feet (Zone 0)
- Remove mulch, dry leaves, pine needles, and plants next to your home, deck, and fences. Use gravel, pavers, or bare soil instead.
- Move firewood, lumber, and storage bins away from the house.
- Replace wood fence sections that attach to your home with metal or masonry.
- Trim branches that hang over the roof.
5 to 30 feet
- Clear dead plants, dry grass, and fallen branches.
- Space out shrubs and trees so fire can't climb or jump between them.
- Keep sheds and propane tanks clear of vegetation.
Roof, gutters, and vents
- Keep the roof and gutters clear of leaves and needles.
- Cover attic, eave, and foundation vents with 1/8-inch metal mesh, or install ember-resistant vents. Do not put mesh over dryer vents. They need a working flap instead.
- Check that your roof is Class A fire-rated.
Decks and patios
- Clear debris from on and under decks.
- Don't store anything under the deck.
- Choose patio furniture that won't burn, or bring cushions indoors when fire is near.
When fire is in the area
- Bring patio cushions, doormats, and outdoor rugs inside.
- Close windows, doors, and vents.
- Start your EmberHawk sprinklers early, before embers arrive.
- Leave when told to evacuate. Don't wait.
